Woman in a colorful sari exploring a temple in India

India is one of the largest international air travel markets in the world, driven by a massive diaspora, booming business travel, and growing tourism. The route network is extensive, but India is also one of the markets where fares vary wildly depending on when you book, which airline you choose, and whether you’re buying a published fare or a consolidator ticket.

Here’s how to navigate it.

Major airports in India

Delhi (DEL) — Indira Gandhi International

India’s busiest international airport. The main gateway for North India and the primary hub for Air India. Nearly every international carrier serving India operates through Delhi. Modern Terminal 3 handles international flights.

Best for: Travelers heading to North India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Himalayas), connecting domestic flights.

Mumbai (BOM) — Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International

India’s financial capital and second-busiest international airport. Hub for Air India and major international carriers. Terminal 2 (T2) is the international terminal.

Best for: Business travelers, travelers heading to West India (Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat).

Bengaluru (BLR) — Kempegowda International

India’s tech capital. Growing international route network with direct flights to London, Singapore, San Francisco, and select European/Middle Eastern cities. Modern airport with a new terminal.

Best for: Tech industry travelers, South India access.

Hyderabad (HYD) — Rajiv Gandhi International

Growing international connections, including direct flights to select US and European cities. Air India launched nonstop HYD-Chicago service.

Chennai (MAA) — Chennai International

Gateway to South India and Sri Lanka. International flights to Southeast Asia, Middle East, and London.

Kochi (COK) and Thiruvananthapuram (TRV)

Important airports for Kerala, with strong connections to the Middle East (large Kerala diaspora in the Gulf states).

Airlines flying to India

From the US

RouteAirlinesTypical economy fare
JFK → DELAir India (nonstop), Emirates, Qatar, Etihad$500-1,200
EWR → DELUnited (nonstop), Air India$500-1,200
SFO → DELAir India (nonstop), United$550-1,300
SFO → BLRAir India (nonstop)$550-1,300
ORD → DELAir India (nonstop), Emirates, Qatar$500-1,200
IAD → DELAir India (nonstop)$500-1,100

Nonstop options from the US are limited. Air India dominates with nonstop service from JFK, EWR, SFO, ORD, IAD, and a few other cities. United operates EWR-DEL and EWR-BOM nonstop. American has seasonal DFW-DEL service.

Gulf carriers dominate connecting traffic. Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha), and Etihad (via Abu Dhabi) carry a huge share of US-India traffic. Their hubs are geographically positioned to efficiently route passengers between the US and India, and they aggressively price these routes.

From the UK

RouteAirlinesTypical economy fare
LHR → DELAir India, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic£350-800
LHR → BOMAir India, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic£350-800
LHR → BLRAir India£350-750
LHR → HYDAir India£350-750

The UK-India market is massive. British Airways and Air India are the primary nonstop operators. Budget carrier IndiGo has also launched select UK-India routes.

From the Middle East

Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Oman Air, and Gulf Air collectively operate hundreds of weekly flights between Gulf cities and Indian airports. These are some of the highest-frequency international routes in the world.

When flights to India are cheapest

Cheapest months: Late January-March, September-early November. Round trip from the US East Coast can drop to $500-700.

Most expensive: Mid-June to mid-August (summer travel), mid-November to early January (holiday season + Indian wedding season). Fares can exceed $1,200-1,500 round trip.

The India fare cycle is driven by diaspora travel. The Indian diaspora in the US and UK drives enormous demand during summer (school holidays), Diwali (October/November), and Christmas/New Year. Airlines know this and price accordingly.

Booking window: 2-4 months before departure typically yields the best fares for economy. For peak season (December), book 4-6 months ahead.

The consolidator fare market for India

India is one of the routes where consolidator fares matter most. The gap between published fares and net consolidator fares on US-India routes can be $200-500 per ticket.

Large ethnic travel agencies in cities like New York, Chicago, and Houston have historically offered significantly cheaper fares to India by leveraging consolidator relationships. These agencies buy net fares from consolidators and add a markup that’s still well below published prices.

The catch: Consolidator tickets often come with restrictions — no changes, limited refund options, and sometimes lower mileage accrual. Always understand what you’re giving up for the lower price.

Tips for booking flights to India

Gulf carriers are often the best value. Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad frequently offer fares $100-300 below nonstop options, with the tradeoff of a 2-4 hour stop in their hub city. The hub airports are modern and comfortable.

Check Air India’s direct fares. Air India’s nonstop pricing has become more competitive since the Tata Group takeover and fleet modernization. Nonstop JFK-DEL in 14-16 hours vs. 20+ hours through a Gulf hub is a meaningful difference.

Don’t overlook European connections. Lufthansa (via Frankfurt), Air France (via Paris), and KLM (via Amsterdam) sometimes offer competitive fares to India, particularly to South Indian destinations.

Book multi-city if visiting multiple Indian cities. Instead of flying into Delhi and separately booking a domestic return from Mumbai, book a multi-city international itinerary (fly into DEL, out of BOM). It’s often the same price as a round trip.

Domestic connections within India are cheap. IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet offer domestic flights for $30-80. Don’t overpay for an international routing to a secondary city when you can fly nonstop to Delhi and connect domestically for much less.

Visa requirements

Most foreign nationals need a visa to enter India. The e-Visa (electronic visa) is available for citizens of 150+ countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Apply online at least 4 days before travel (72 hours recommended).

  • e-Tourist Visa: Up to 30 days (single/double entry) or 1 year/5 years (multiple entry)
  • Cost: $10-80 depending on duration and nationality
  • Processing: Usually 3-5 business days

OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders have visa-free entry with no restrictions.
